We are writing to express our interest in participating in the AGROECOLOGY network. We are members of the Tropical Ecology and Ecosystem Services Lab (EcoSs Lab) at the Universidad Técnica Particular de Loja (UTPL) in Ecuador, which has extensive experience in research related to biodiversity conservation and the dynamics of tropical (agro)ecosystems in response to global change. In collaboration with local, regional and international partners, our group has directed 66 research projects and consultancies to date related to biodiversity management and monitoring in southern Ecuador.
Two of our research areas might be of particular interest to this call. First, we are working with small farmers, local governments and other key stakeholders to study the sustainable use of native bee pollinators as a catalyst for biodiversity conservation and climate change mitigation in the tropical dry forest of Ecuador. A main objective of this work is to promote agrobiodiversity by assessing and disseminating practices involving agricultural diversification and tree enrichment at both the farm and landscape level. Second, we are working with 140 small organic farmers (47% women), local governments, and a major local company to promote a circular economy model for herb/spice production and zero organic waste farms in the Ecuadorian Andes. This initiative supports sustainable farming practices and fosters economic empowerment, particularly among women, while contributing to the preservation of the Andean ecosystem. Both programs represent integrated approaches to the related problems of environmental degradation and marginalization of small farmers.
