forest-grazing dairy, Swedish mountain cows, pasture-grazed beef, soil/plant/animal health, nutritional density of milk and meat, open-source digital sensors, AI and data science for biosensing, profitable regenerative family farms
- at the farm level and its immediate surroundings
We are interested in cooperating with others who want to study agroecological processes at two rather unique family farms that are profitable using traditional farming methods at the geographic midpoint of Sweden at 62 degrees north. We have identified several natural experiments that span over multiple generations at the farms to test various pressing agro-ecological hypotheses rigorously. The first farm focuses on an entirely pasture grazing beef herd with emphasis on zero chemical inputs and maximising biodiversity above and below ground with customised breeding for the landscape. The second farm has an exceptional dairy herd of the traditional but rare breed of Swedish mountain cows that autonomously graze in modern production forests all summer. The main interest would be around quantifying with appropriate metrics the actual ecosystem services rendered by these profitable family farms, that have adapted traditional methods, to raise cattle for meat and milk on pastures and forests in the middle of Sweden. Such services include: above and below ground bio-diversity of flora and fauna, health of soils, plants and animals, carbon sequestration and the ensuing nutritional density in their meat and milk. Our non-farming team includes academics at Uppsala University (Sweden) and Swedish University of agricultural sciences (Sweden) and Vilnius University (Lithuania) with specialisation in AI/data science, natural resource management and portable biosensors. We are looking for at least one partner outside Sweden and Lithuania who has complementary expertise in regenerative farming, social and economic aspects of small farms, measuring biodiversity, measuring nutritional density, rhizosphere ecology, or other similar areas, to join our team. Our primary aim is to scientifically measure, test and learn to scalably replicate the agroecological farming practices and processes at these rather uniquely regenerative and increasing rare family farms, that are profitably producing milk and meat from healthy soils while enhancing biodiversity .
