plant breeding seed crop variety species varieties
- at the farm level and its immediate surroundings
Plants are an essential part of the ecosystem and plant breeding helps to adapt plants to environmental and other challenges. We are interested in conducting further research on how plant breeding can contribute to facilitate agroecological approaches at farm level.
We are particularly interested to research the potential of plant breeding and adapted plant varieties for:
- managing soil and water to improve soil health and as well as reducing farm-level inputs (e.g. fertiliser etc.)
- promoting crop diversification: diversify species and varieties at the field and farm level
- develop agronomic practices serving to increase resilience, water conservation and to drastically
reduce the use of chemical inputs
- enhancing complementarities between animal and crop production
- promoting natural regulation of pests and diseases
- enhancing ecosystem services, biodiversity and beneficial biological interactions
Plant breeders hold a lot of practical knowledge including local and even traditional knowledge, relating to the cultivation of plants in diverse ecosystems.
Euroseeds is the voice of the European seed sector. We therefore represent those active in research, breeding, production and marketing of seeds of agricultural, horticultural and ornamental plant species.
Euroseeds as well as plant breeding companies in Europe are involved in H2020 and Horizon Europe projects to provide specific input and expertise in support of the multi actor approach.
Euroseeds usually provides support activities in communication, dissemination and exploitation (i.e. innovation transfer of results to create long term sustainable impact for the benefit of society).
Through our broad network of breeding companies, seed producers, dedicated machinery companies, logistics and service providers, we can contribute to the research activities for agroecological approaches.
