Autonomous and service robotics in the agricultural sector
Politecnico di Torino (www.polito.it) is a public university founded in 1859, offering excellence in technology and promoting research in many fields, from engineering to architecture and industrial design. With more than 1000 academic staff, 1000 administrative staff and 38000 students from more than 100 countries, its mission is to create a high quality environment for researchers and students to study, work and collaborate on innovative projects. PoliTO is member of several international networks (Unite! alliance, CESAER, CLUSTER, EUA).
PoliTO takes part in the activities through the members of the Interdepartmental Centre for Service Robotics (PIC4SeR - https://pic4ser.polito.it/), which, with about 50 researchers from 5 Departments (Department of Electronics and Telecommunications, Department of Automation and Informatics, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Department of Environmental, Land and Infrastructure Engineering and Department of Architecture and Design), is the point of reference in the field of service robotics and related enabling technologies.
The objective of PIC4SeR is to create a common physical environment and community, in which tools and expertise can reside to organically synthesize the characteristics of different application scenarios, such as: precision agriculture, smart cities, search and rescue, patrol and early warning systems, life support for the elderly and disabled, rehabilitation, archaeological survey, security, protection and more.
The experience and knowledge gained through the development of the project modules will be incorporated into training courses, both at undergraduate and postgraduate level, and will support doctoral theses. As a non-profit organization, PIC4SeR will entrust the development of the results to technology providers and end users, who have the necessary networks to promote the results on the market.
The projects will also strengthen PIC4SeR's R&D advisory capabilities vis-à-vis various national and European industrial partners. The results will form the basis for further R&D actions. This will result in the future launch of R&D projects.
The technological competences of the PIC4SeR research unit relevant to the proposed activity cover: a) mechatronic technology on service robots in land, maritime and airborne applications; b) acquisition, synchronization, fusion and integration of multi-sensor data using navigation sensors (GNSS, IMU), imaging sensors (high resolution digital camera in the visible, infrared, thermal, multispectral, hyperspectral fields), terrestrial/airborne laser scanners (FARO, Leica, RIEGL, Hokuyo, SICK, etc.); c) real-time processing and transmission of stereoscopic RGB data and 3D models for virtual/augmented reality; d) human interaction and multimedia interfaces. ); e) real-time processing and transmission of stereoscopic RGB data and 3D models for virtual/augmented reality; f) human interaction and multimedia interfaces.
