Transform value chains, businesses and policies to facilitate the transition to agroecology
The Izmir Metropolitan Municipality implements a wide range of projects within the scope of agroecological practices. Among these projects, four distinct urban orchards stand out, functioning as living labs within Izmir, where various plant species are cultivated together. In these orchards, agroecological production techniques such as bokashi and compost fertilization are carried out with the participation of migrant women. These spaces are not limited to agricultural production alone; in line with the inclusiveness of agroecology, they also feature activity areas where children and participating individuals can receive education and enhance their social integration. As part of the agroecological production process, district bazaars, constructed by the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, provide participants with the opportunity to market their surplus produce beyond their household needs. In this context, a holistic approach is adopted in which social, economic, and cultural structures are established within a cyclical system, making use of idle urban spaces from production to marketing.
Furthermore, the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality employs experts specializing in agroecology, and within this expertise, various analyses are planned under the framework of the "Urban Agroecology" initiative. These analyses include environmental and social life cycle assessments, as well as environmental impact evaluations of urban orchards. In addition, to measure potential impact categories, the social life cycle multi-capital model will be utilized to prepare foresight reports for similar urban initiatives planned for the future.
Within this framework, we look forward to collaborating on constructing innovative agroecological cities and integrating such initiatives into disadvantaged areas to enhance sustainability.
