Strengthening farmers’ involvement and empowerment in the transition towards agroecology
Our goal is to move beyond theory and make agroecology a practical, commercial reality for the fruit export sector. At the University of Extremadura (INURA-CAMIALI), we are looking for a diverse mix of partners to bridge the gap between sustainable farming and high-standard market demands.
Who we are looking for:
• Engineering & Tech: We need Agricultural, IT, and Industrial Engineers to help us co-design and validate non-destructive sensors and Decision Support Systems (DSS) that actually work in the field.
• Social, Legal & Environmental Science: The transition isn't just technical; it's human. We are looking for experts in Sociology, Law, and Political Science to tackle bureaucratic barriers and land access, as well as specialists in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Circular Economy to measure and optimize our environmental impact.
• The Fruit Industry & Outreach: We want to work directly with farmers, cooperatives, and agricultural associations ready to host Living Labs. We also value partners skilled in multi-actor engagement and communication to ensure our results reach the right people, from policymakers to the general public.
What we bring to the project: We offer more than just academic research. Based in one of Europe’s main fruit-exporting hubs, we provide a direct link to the industry and deep expertise in food safety and mycotoxin control. We are looking to co-create tools that aren't just "green," but also profitable, safe, and viable for the next generation of farmers.
We are the CAMIALI research group, part of the University Research Institute for Agricultural Resources (INURA) at the University of Extremadura. While our background is academic, our work is deeply rooted in the practical challenges of the Mediterranean agri-food sector.
What defines us is our "field-to-table" approach. We don't just study plants or pathogens in isolation; we analyze how they interact within the entire value chain. Our core expertise lies in food safety, post-harvest technology, and the management of fungal and mycotoxin risks, a critical bottleneck for fruit exports in the face of climate change.
Why we are a strong partner for this call:
- Strategic Location: Operating from Extremadura, one of Europe’s major fruit-producing regions, we have a direct line to the industry, from small-scale farmers to large export cooperatives.
- Advanced Facilities: Through INURA, we combine high-level laboratory analysis with the ability to run pilot tests in real-world environments.
- Multidisciplinary DNA: We are used to working at the intersection of agronomy, microbiology, and technology. We believe that for agroecology to succeed, it must be backed by solid data, safe standards, and tools that make life easier for the farmer
