heritage pig breeding, linderödsvin genebank, agroecological management with pigs, apple and walnut genebank
Enhancing the genetic diversity and variability of crops and livestock for the agroecological transition
We are a genebank for the last remaining heritage breed of pigs in Sweden known as linderödsvin. We are engaged in an active pig breeding program to select traits useful to working the field, orchard and forest lands with the pigs, as well as meat quality, mothering instinct, team-playing, extreme winter weather tolerance and foraging abilities. We have just started preparation for a fruit and nut orchard aimed at being one of the genebanks for apple and walnut varieties in northern Sweden (62'N). The pig-breeding program is co-evolving with the transformation and management of our forests, orchards and fields, with the objective of minimising the use of large agricultural machinery and eliminating agrochemical inputs in planting, growing and harvesting operations. We have used drones and classical field surveys to document and study the diversity and plant community ecology in controlled experimental designs with and without the impact of our pigs. Thus, there are possibilities to cooperate with the data science and AI branch of our company. Crucially, we are not merely a genebank but also a small producer and retailer, currently selling meat, and charcuterir (soon via e-commerce), from our free pigs, under a model of radical transparency as detailed at https://vake.works/pledge and therefore strengthening farmers' involvement and empowerment in the transition towards agroecology by being the primary benefeciary of the shortest possible farm to table operation is integral to our strategy to enhancing the genetic diversity and variability of crops and livestock for the agroecological transition. We have 18 hectares composed of fields and forests with a river bank, isolated forest lake and a stream, close to the geographic midpoint of Sweden, with one of the most volatile daily temperature variations in the country, and thus ideally suited for climate-resilient living systems research across various interlinked terrestrial and aquatic agroecological systems.
VakeWorks Vision:
Our vision is to use systems research and thinking from an algorithms-machines-lives-planet perspective, to create regenerative and resilient living systems that are economically profitable and beneficial to society and the planet. Thus, the company conducts, facilitates, and enables production, retail, research, development, teaching, and training activities through regenerative approaches to agriculture, aquaculture, forestry, agritourism, and health, as well as consulting and teaching activities in knowledge-intensive areas, including data science, data engineering, machine learning, mathematics, statistics, AI, natural resource management, and therewith compatible activities.
VakeWorks Mission:
Our mission is to help ourselves and others eat the change we want to be through experiments in radically transparent food networks that provide the five transparency guarantees: income transparency, produce transparency, process transparency, profits transparency and ecological transparency.
