Enhancing the genetic diversity and variability of crops and livestock for the agroecological transition
We are looking for partners who could assist us in the investigation of our traditional cereals and pulses from the Serrania de Ronda region (Andalucía, Spain). We offer our territory as a living laboratory for agroecological research and collaboration. Our interest lies in consolidating and characterizing the pulses and cereal plant material we already conserve, and advancing its registration as organic heterogeneous material to ensure open access for any farmer or herder who may benefit from it. We have our own seed bank and a multiplication field where we research and characterise more than 50 varieties of cereals and pulses. Through this process, we aim to train and advise producers who see value in integrating these varieties into their practices, while learning from their contextual feedback—social, territorial and agronomic. We are also exploring synergies between these crops and livestock integration, assessing different possibilities for mixed systems. In parallel, we will disseminate the relevance of using these seeds in rural contexts and build on the collaborations we already maintain with farmers, technicians, bakers, consumers and institutions engaged in this field.
Serranías Vivas is a territorial initiative dedicated to revitalising rural mountain areas through agroecology, community participation and landscape stewardship. The organisation works to strengthen the ecological and socio‑economic resilience of serranía territories by promoting sustainable land management, biodiversity conservation and the recovery of traditional agro‑pastoral practices. Its activities combine applied research, farmer‑to‑farmer knowledge exchange and the creation of collaborative networks that connect local producers, technical experts and public institutions. Serranías Vivas also develops strategies to enhance local value chains, restore cultural landscapes and support rural communities in maintaining their livelihoods while adapting to environmental and demographic challenges. Through this integrated approach, the organisation positions itself as a catalyst for rural innovation and long‑term territorial sustainability.
