Strengthening farmers’ involvement and empowerment in the transition towards agroecology
We seek cooperation with partners interested in promoting agroecological education and sustainable dryland cereal systems. Our main objective is to promote the sustainable production, processing and consumption of traditional local cereals through specific training for farmers, bakers and consumers. The collaboration would support capacity building in agroecological practices on dryland, the development of artisanal processing skills for traditional flours, and consumer education on the nutritional, environmental and cultural value of local and organic cereal products. We also aim to create a multi-stakeholder learning platform that connects producers, processors and consumers, fostering knowledge exchange and collective management of local biodiversity. Other areas of cooperation include the design of sustainable natural resource management plans, the circular economy, and the co-development of innovative and ecological strategies for climate change adaptation based on traditional cereal and legume varieties.
Our approach fits with Sub-topic 2.2 (COLLECTIVE ACTION, PEER LEARNING, AND SOCIAL INNOVATION) because it is based on collective action, peer learning and multi-stakeholder platforms to accelerate the agroecological transition. Cooperativa Cereales Locales Ecológicos coordinates a broad network of farmers, bakers, consumers, universities, and administrations, creating spaces for co-learning such as ‘theoretical-practical workshops on our farms’ and ‘participatory activities that bring the three sectors together around the value of agricultural biodiversity.’ The existence of a seed bank and a multiplication field function as a living lab where local varieties are researched and tested, while training for farmers and bakers acts as a structured mechanism for peer-to-peer knowledge exchange. In addition, the cooperative already operates as a collaborative structure that facilitates access to markets; (for example, its network of bakeries and restaurants) and promotes social innovation through consumer groups and territorial alliances. Taken together, the project demonstrates how collective action, peer-to-peer advice, and field experimentation can drive the adoption, testing, and scaling of agroecological innovations in different territories.
Serranías Vivas is a territorial initiative dedicated to revitalising rural mountain areas through agroecology, community participation and landscape stewardship. The organisation works to strengthen the ecological and socio‑economic resilience of serranía territories by promoting sustainable land management, biodiversity conservation and the recovery of traditional agro‑pastoral practices. Its activities combine applied research, farmer‑to‑farmer knowledge exchange and the creation of collaborative networks that connect local producers, technical experts and public institutions. Serranías Vivas also develops strategies to enhance local value chains, restore cultural landscapes and support rural communities in maintaining their livelihoods while adapting to environmental and demographic challenges. Through this integrated approach, the organisation positions itself as a catalyst for rural innovation and long‑term territorial sustainability.
