Strengthening farmers’ involvement and empowerment in the transition towards agroecology
Our main interest lies in contributing to projects that:
- Apply living lab or living-lab-like approaches in real farming contexts;
- Explore farmers’ motivations, barriers and enabling conditions for agroecological transitions;
- Strengthen collective action, peer-to-peer learning and advisory services;
- Generate evidence-based policy recommendations grounded in practical experience.
SDAFL is particularly keen to contribute insights from remote, island and structurally constrained regions, where agroecological transitions highlight systemic challenges and policy gaps, and where solutions developed can be highly informative for wider European contexts. We are open to participating as a Partner or Associated Partner, depending on consortium needs and funding arrangements.
SDAFL (Serviço de Desenvolvimento Agrário da Ilha das Flores) is a public agrarian development service operating at local level in Flores Island, Azores, Portugal. Its mission is to support farmers and rural communities through technical assistance, advisory services, capacity building and the promotion of sustainable agricultural practices.
SDAFL works closely with farmers, local authorities, advisory bodies and other stakeholders to strengthen the resilience, sustainability and social viability of farming systems, with particular attention to small-scale, diversified and livestock-based systems. The organisation has practical experience in participatory approaches, farmer engagement, demonstration activities and multi-actor collaboration, and plays an active role in facilitating dialogue between practice, administration and policy.
Operating in one of Portugal’s most remote and food-insecure regions, SDAFL provides a real-life experimentation context for agroecological practices, advisory models and policy instruments, making it well suited to contribute to living labs, case studies and science–policy interface activities within European research and innovation projects.
