Strengthening farmers’ involvement and empowerment in the transition towards agroecology
NORSØK would like to contribute to topics 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 og 2.4 and offer to be a task leader for one of these sub-topics.
We are still at a very early stage of project development; however, we have some existing structures and networks that could serve as a useful starting point.
We do have a newly established network where we work together with organic farmers, farm advisors and local agricultural authorities. The aims of this project are: a) Identify fundamental opportunities and challenges in relation to agronomic, economic, social and environmental sustainability on organic farms in Central Norway that have a greater or lesser proportion of meadows and food crops, b) Identify opportunities to increase the proportion of food crops on selected farms with organic production that supply a local market for organic food. (background; in vast areas of Norway, production consists of one-sided forage-livestock systems) c) Proposals for support schemes that can contribute to increased diversity and cultivation of food crops for local sales.
We are currently working with the multi-criteria assessment “Tool for Agroecology Performance Evaluation” TAPE (step 1), on 6 farms, and will use the outcome as a baseline for further discussions in a network with the farmers, agri-advisors and the county governor (decision-making stakeholder).
In the Agroecology call 3 project, we would like to cooperate with partners that are strong within agroecological methods which involve farmers and advisors to facilitate the transition towards towards enhanced adpotion of agroecological aproaches on farm and regional scale.
The private, independent foundation NORSØK is a national centre for the development of organic agriculture through interdisciplinary research and outreach. NORSØK also manages an organic farm. Our work is based on the four principles of organic agriculture: health, ecology, fairness and care. NORSØK and the farm are located in Tingvoll in Møre og Romsdal county.
NORSØK contributes knowledge for increasing the sustainability of agriculture and society. Our staff covers a wide range of expertise, and provides a broad range of research, consulting and outreach services. NORSØK’s main areas of expertise are organic agriculture and food production, environmental science, sustainability and renewable energy. The emphasis of our work is within natural science. However, we do have an employee holding a master’s degree within agroecology as well as relevant practical experiences and want to develop this work further together with partners that are strong within an agroecological approach to social science. https://www.norsok.no/en.
