Strengthening farmers’ involvement and empowerment in the transition towards agroecology
KannaLab is interested in joining a consortium under Topic 2 as a practice-based Living Lab partner. We contribute real-life implementation contexts in marginal rural regions of Eastern Slovakia, focusing on farmer engagement, co-creation, and short value chains. We operate small farm and are involved in regional stakeholder group LEADER.
We are particularly interested in collaborations that:
– apply Living Lab or living-lab-like approaches in real farming contexts,
– strengthen farmers’ involvement through practical experimentation and peer learning,
– explore short, locally embedded value chains that increase farmer viability,
– connect agroecological production with downstream uses (e.g. fibre, materials, design),
– generate practice-based insights relevant for policy and advisory services.
We are open to participating as a funded partner or associated/in-kind partner, depending on consortium structure and funding arrangements.
KannaLab is a Slovakia-based research and innovation initiative working in marginal rural regions of Eastern Slovakia. We operate as a practice-oriented Living Lab, providing real-world contexts for agroecological experimentation, stakeholder engagement, and learning-by-doing. KannaLab’s role in projects is not academic research coordination, but enabling implementation, co-creation with local stakeholders (e.g. LEADER-type actors), facilitation of Living Lab activities, and translation of research into practice. We aim to contribute grounded insights from marginal regions to support agroecological transitions that are socially, economically, and territorially realistic.
Our current activities focus mainly on hemp as an agroecological crop, including cultivation under marginal conditions and the development of short value chains. Together with Textilné centrum (Slovakia), we are developing a farm-to-fibre model that connects farmers with local processing, material experimentation, and design outputs, aiming to strengthen local value creation and farmer resilience.
In parallel, we are exploring practical bio-based innovations, such as enzyme and microbial solutions for seed coating, in collaboration with partners from Central Europe. These activities are at pilot stage and are embedded in real farming constraints rather than laboratory research.
